02 🌲 The Vibe

Laid-back beach camping on a quiet white-sand shore, far beyond the reach of any signal bar.

Sunsets from the beach are the daily highlight; total darkness at night brings out the Milky Way.

Simple, honest and no-frills — the kind of place campers quietly keep to themselves.

The only background noise is the waves: one side of the beach rough, the other calm.

03 🚗 Getting There

Getting there — no public transport; drive ~20 km northwest from Kudat town towards Tip of Borneo; last stretch is a sandy track

04 🛏️ Staying at Max Campsite

A no-frills beach campsite on Kalampunian Beach where RM15 buys you tent space, basic facilities and total silence — no phone signal, just waves, sunsets and stars. Pitch on the sand or inside the fenced compound, and let the on-site cafe handle breakfast-to-teatime meals.

  • Beach camping, simplest form - Tents go up on the white sand of Kalampunian Beach or inside the camp compound; two beaches sit side by side, so if one is wavy the other stays calm. Entry includes electricity, freshwater, showers, toilets, lights, covered benches and parking.
  • Digital detox guaranteed - There is no cellular coverage at the beach and the camp's WiFi is not shared with guests — reviewers consistently call this a feature, not a bug. Total darkness at night means the Milky Way comes out on clear nights.
  • Cafe + activity hire on site - A small cafe serves good-value Sabahan food from 9am to 6pm (the friendly waiter is also the cook). Kayaks, banana boats, snorkel gear and ATVs are available for hire, and firewood is provided for campfires.
Good to know

Book & prep: call/WhatsApp 019-467 1157 (owner Max) — no website or online booking. Bring: mosquito repellent and sandfly protection (they are no joke), a torch, cash (no ATM at the beach) and dinner supplies — the cafe closes at 6pm. Note: no phone signal at the campsite; download your maps and let someone know your plans before you go. Firewood is available on site.

Beachfront pitchesToilets & showersElectricityFreshwaterCar parkOn-site cafeHut rentalActivity hire

🏖️ Beachfront pitches — Tents go up directly on Kalampunian Beach or inside the fenced camp compound. The beach is split in two by a headland — when one side is wavy, the other is calm — with clean, fine sand and clear water.

🚿 Basic comforts included — The RM15 entry fee covers electricity, freshwater, showers, toilets, lights, covered benches and car parking. Wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking are noted on the Google listing.

🍛 On-site cafe — A small cafe serves Sabahan food at budget-coffeeshop prices, with quality reviewers rank among the best. Open 9am–6pm only, and tables are in the open — watch your food for flies.

🛶 Activities for hire — Kayaking, banana boat rides, snorkeling and ATV rides are available to hire on site, plus full sets of camping equipment. A catalogue of water-sports gear is kept at the camp.

🏕️ Huts & campfires — Simple huts are available to rent if you prefer not to pitch a tent, and firewood is provided for cooking and keeping warm — and for keeping the sandflies at bay.

"Went there on this date. I'll give more stars if I could. Max is a very friendly guy and his place is one of the best camping site I've ever been to. It's a very layback place. ... You'll get total darkness at night and if you're lucky you can see Milky Way (I saw it and it's awesome, no pictures cause don't own a proper camera). ... Many sandflies (have to careful, I build a fire to reduce the fly for biting but I still got bitten). ... The camp site and beach is so calm and nice. A place worth to be back. Thanks Max for accepting us. Hope we'll be back."

★★★★★

"This is a well organised campsite located at the best beach in the world. The beaches are split into two places so if one is wavy, the other side is calm. The sand is pure untainted with mud so the water is clear. ... At such a low cost of rm15 per entry, you are provided with space to setup a test, electricity, freshwater, showers, toilets, lights, covered benches and car park. ... The service is excellent and unheard of. The waiter is also the cook who is exceptionally friendly as is normal for Sabahan natives, and willing to even share his cooking styles."

- Google review — Othman Ahmad (Google review, 2021)

Very positive spread: 14 five-star and 4 four-star reviews against 2 three-star and a single 2-star, so the 4.5 average is driven by long, enthusiastic camper reviews — the only real complaint threads are insects and one report of rude service.
