Bayu Kinabalu Campsite, Kiau Taburi

01 Quick Facts
02 🌲 The Vibe
A quiet hillside camp where the main event is the mountain itself — Kinabalu fills the view from your tent door, front and back.
Nights are cold, still and starry, with silence broken only by the breeze; mornings bring mist and sunrise on the granite face.
Run by warm, hands-on local staff who treat campers like house guests — lending umbrellas in the rain and replying to every review with a thank-you.
Popular with families, bikers and first-timers from KK and Kota Belud; weekends can get lively with big groups and speakers.
03 🚗 Getting There
Getting there — Gravel road uphill; sedans take Kiau junction route, not the upper shortcut
Rough gravel access road; sedans should use the longer Kiau junction route; Cold at night, no hot water — bring blankets
04 🛏️ Staying at Bayu Kinabalu Campsite, Kiau Taburi
A highland camping ground on the foothills of Mount Kinabalu where the mountain fills the view from your tent door, with cold starry nights, a visible Sopuk Mopuk waterfall from some lots, and staff who will even pitch your rented tent for you.
- Wake up facing Kinabalu - Five named grounds — Radap, Gosing, Dalai, Mandahasi and Babas — are spread across the hillside, so you can pitch facing the mountain and watch sunrise light up the granite face, with the Sopuk Mopuk waterfall in the distance from some spots.
- Chill mountain nights - Temperatures drop sharply after dark and the tap water runs icy, but each camp area has plug points, a dishwashing station, and there's a small reception store for maggi, drinks and snacks — plus BBQ pits for a proper night cookout under the stars.
- First-timer friendly - Rent tents, mattresses and even kitchen sets on site, and staff set the tent up for you — beginners, families and bikers can turn up with just clothes and food and still camp like pros.

06 💬 What Campers Are Saying
"The place is beautiful, cold at night, the facilities are decent, it's easy to access and the staffs are friendly too. However from my recent trip last week, it now has the same problem as many popular campsites, noise pollution. Despite it's beauty, the place is plague with campers who brought their large speakers and blasting their loud music the whole time I was there. It ruined the senerity and beauty of the site and I was annoyed the whole time."
"NGL. The scenery is breathtaking. The facilities provided are more than enough (toilet, shower room, share sink, etc) we even got plug point near to our campsite. Got a decent connection here (I use Digi). The staff are friendly and helpful too! It was raining on the day of arrival, they lend us umbrella even though we never ask for one. It is quite a ride to reach this place (we use Honda) but sure it was worth the experience, truly a healing place if you are tired from hustle & bustle of the city 🤣"
"The view is just magnificent. The staff are friendly and helpful. You can rent a tent and any items for camping. Toilets and showers are very clean. Go to their website and chat through WhatsApp for a fast reply. There are 2 ways to enter this place. If you are from KK, the better route is from Kiau junction, Kampung Kiau. The other one on the top is closer but not suitable for sedan or lowered car."
52 of the 56 Google reviews are 5-star, with 3 four-star and a single 3-star (a noise complaint), averaging 4.9 — no reviews below 3 stars.
